Success Tip #1 - Get Involved In Your Industry!
Whatever business you're in, chances are there is an association of professionals who meet on a regular basis to discuss the industry's current state and future direction. If you can't find one for your specific product or service (ie. Web design), look for an association with a broader mandate (ie. Technology). Use these associations to meet the movers and shakers in the industry, find new partners and customers, and understand the current trends. You have to be in to win!

Success Tip #2 - There Is Always A Competitor!
Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of assuming they are the only ones with a specific product or service. Understand that there is always a competitor! If you think you have an innovative idea for a toothbrush for example, a quick check at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office reveals over 500 toothbrush patents for everything from self-loading toothpaste handles to bristle design. Know who your competitors are and how you will differentiate yourself. Never assume that you are alone!

Success Tip #3 - Emotional Attachment!
Never get too emotionally attached to one idea or one way of doing things. Your original plans will always change as you get feedback from the market. The only opinion that really matters is that of your customer. The way to build a successful business is to mold your creative idea around willing customers. They are the ones who are going to be paying you at the end of the day so make them happy! What I'm Reading

The Bootstrapper's Bible (5/5)
"The Bootstrapper's Bible" is written by Seth Godin, author of "Unleashing the Ideavirus" and "Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers Into Friends and Friends Into Customers." This book looks at how to get your business up and running with little money. Most people who start their own companies do not have a large investor paying for all their expenses. This book helps you understand what to do in order to stay on a small budget but achieve great results! Three of the key insights are:

1) The main advantages that you have as an entrepreneur going up against bigger competitors are: you have nothing to lose and can take big risks, you don't need to close the huge accounts to build a business and are happy with smaller fish, you are in control and can make fast decisions, small research and development teams work more quickly than large ones, you are the underdog (and everyone loves cheering for the underdog), you have lower overhead costs, and you have the freedom to do what you want with your time - if you want to take the whole day off to think about a new product idea, you can!

2) The fundamental startup questions that should be asked are: is this business profitable? Is it protectible when competitors enter the market? Is it self-priming so that one time customers become life time customers? Is it adjustable so you can react to industry changes? Is there an exit strategy?

3) Are you a freelancer or an entrepreneur? A freelancer sells her talents while an entrepreneur builds a company that is bigger than herself. Freelancers buy themselves a job where as entrepreneurs hire others to do the job for them. Which category do you fall under and how will you adjust your mentality?

This was the first time I read an e-book and have Jesse Desjardins to thank for giving it to me. It is a fantastic resource for startup entrepreneurs and a must read! It is very informative, easy to understand, and "off the wall" enough to get you thinking creatively about your business. Success Tips

Success Tip #1 - Don't Underestimate Customer Education!
Introducing an innovative product or service will usually require changing the habits of your customer. This is always a time consuming and difficult process. Try to make it as easy as possible for your customers to use your product or they will go back to their old ways, no matter how inefficient they may be. You have to educate the customer not to be afraid of your new product!

Success Tip #2 - Entrepreneur = Salesperson!
One fact that many entrepreneurs overlook is that they are in the selling game. In an Angus Reid survey only 4% of respondents thought that good salesmanship was the key element in entrepreneurial success. In an entrepreneurial organization everyone must always be selling - do not wait for others to come in and do it for you!

Success Tip #3 - The Secret To Selling: Listening!
A good salesperson sells much more by listening than by speaking. The more you can better understand your customer's or partner's needs the better you will be able to fulfill those needs. You would be surprised at how frequently you don't truly know what your customers want and how nobody has ever really taken the time to listen to them!

What I'm Reading

Leadership (5/5)

Leadership is written by former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The book examines his career as a corporate lawyer, US attorney, and mayor and uses real life examples to back up his good leadership formula. So what does this have to do with running a business? Well, it takes strong leaders to take the helm of any organization or project be it an up and coming new business or one of the world's largest cities. Three of the more interesting lessons for entrepreneurs are:

1) See everything with your own eyes. Don't simply follow the opinions of the people who surround you. Whenever there is a critical business decision to be made, from a serious customer problem to expanding into new markets, make sure you are at the helm. When you blindly go along with those around you, you are subject to their biases and personal motives. Learn enough about the topic to form your own opinion and be confident in it.

2) Sweat the small stuff. Nothing can take the place of solid preparation. If you are trying to close a customer, partner, or investor you must prepare relentlessly. Do not assume that you know their problems or their questions. Prepare from every possible angle so you are not surprised if you get hit with a particular question - you have the answer for it already. The worst that can happen is you've prepared information for questions that never get asked which is much better than the alternative of not having the information ready for the tough questions.

3) You are responsible. No matter what happens in your company, as the CEO, you are responsible. If your distributor mismanages an order or if your employee insults a customer, you are responsible. Do not try to deflect the responsibility to someone else. Care for your company as you would care for yourself and you will achieve greater success that those around you.

Overall it was a quick book to read and tells a great story. It is very easy at times to picture yourself right next to him in the courtroom, meeting, and especially during the September 11 attack. I would recommend this book for anyone who is thinking about taking a leadership position by starting their own business or within a company or organization.
